Cookie Policy

Cookies are usually small text files, that are stored on your computer's browser directory or program data subfolders. Cookies are created when you use your browser to visit a website that uses cookies to keep track of your movements within the site, help you resume where you left off, remember your registered login, theme selection, preferences, and other customization functions. The website stores corresponding information to the one they set in your browser and so they can track and keep information on your movements within the site and any information you may have voluntarily given while visiting the website, such as email address.

Cookies are often indispensable for websites to provide good user experience. With cookies disabled it is usually impossible to login to a site. Cookies usually don't contain much information except for the address of the website that created the cookie, the duration of the cookie's abilities and effects, and some random number. Due to the little amount of information a cookie contains, it usually cannot be used to reveal your identity or personally identifying information. However, marketing is becoming increasingly sophisticated and cookies in some cases can be aggressively used to create a profile of your surfing habits.

There are two types of cookies: session cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies are created temporarily in your browser while you are visiting a website. Once you leave the site (or better, exit the browser), the session cookie is deleted. On the other hand, persistent cookie files remain in your browser's storage and are activated (sent back to the site along the request for the web page) once you visit the website that created that particular cookie. A persistent cookie remains in the browser's storage for the duration period set within the cookie's file.

For more information on cookies please visit allaboutcookies.org - we extracted the above text from their site. Please note, however, that the ad-related text on that site does not apply to AlgEn web site: we do not use any third party ads, we do not do any search engine manipulation and we do not subscribe to ad-words or similar services. The only third party service we use is Google Analytics to monitor the activity on web site and get web page usage data. We may use other services in the future, but as of this writing (September 2013) we rely only on plain good old fashioned ways leading users to our web pages by unbiased search engines and hyperlinks.

EU directive on the protection of privacy in the electronic communications (2009/136/EC) recently implemented in all EU states requires "consent for storage or access to information stored on a subscriber or users terminal equipment" – in other words a requirement to obtain consent for cookies and similar technologies. For more background information on this please visit Guidance on the rules on use of cookies and similar technologies by UK Information Commisioners Office, or Smernice o uporabi piškotkov by Slovenian Information Commissioner (as our site runs under Slovenian legislation).
